From the moment you step off your flight, the chauffeur driven ride to Talalla House will whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of modern life to your own private paradise. The pool, the deck, the bar, the lounge and dining area will accommodate all of your family and friends. The rooftop garden is ideal for groups to come together over dinner and drinks.

Perhaps in the morning you’ll take your family on a private Safari to see elephants and leopards, or you’ll sail out to witness the mighty blue whale. Later – while generations of your family stroll down the colonial streets of the World Heritage site, Galle Fort, or surf the right-handers up the coast – you might prefer walks on the beach, or reading a book in the shade after a massage. However you choose to enjoy your time, you’ll be reunited for a sunset dinner on the rooftop garden, ready to ask each other, “What did you do today?”

THE VILLA

A peaceful sanctuary, designed to release your most positive energy, by award winning architects A00.

Enter Talalla House via a labyrinth where sunlight passes through slits in the wall to light up a tropical fishpond. Hear the ocean as you walk the long hall, past the kitchen, and into the open living area. From here, all eyes are drawn to the highlight of Talalla, the golden sandy beach stretching in front of you for a kilometre. It is framed by the pool’s infinity edge and a lush tropical garden. In this living area, you have dining for up to 14 people at the main table and guets can lounge in the enormous sofas overlooking the ocean. The entire living area opens to the deck and pool. On the ground floor, you’ll find one en suite bedroom adjoining the living area, with ocean views and sliding doors that open to the pool deck.

From the living area, a stairway takes you to the first floor hallway with access to four bedrooms, all with air-conditioning and private balconies with undisturbed ocean views.

The master and junior suites have bathtubs on their balconies. At the end of the hall you enter the covered, open air yoga and Ayurveda studio facing the ocean. If you wish, this area can also function as a private covered terrace for the master suite. Take the stairway to the rooftop with its 30 m (100 ft) long garden; from there you overlook both the beach and the open ocean. The rooftop garden has a small bar and lounge chairs, and at the far end, a vegetable and spice garden. This is the place to be for your sunset drinks. Back at the ground floor, walk past the pool through the garden to the entrance of two smaller garden rooms, each with a fan, en suite toilet, and private garden shower, perfect for teenagers or couples with kids who want to live in the garden. At the back of the house you’ll find the staff quarters. Talalla House has a 24/7 security guard and a gated parking area.

Spacious Living & Dining Area

A truly unique open-plan living and dining room leads onto a wooden deck and pool. From all areas you have striking views of the soft, golden beach in the distance, behind the infinity pool’s sharp blue edges. A beautiful handmade folding rattan screen separates the fan-cooled living area from the kitchen. When folded back, it opens the living area to the spacious, fully equipped kitchen.

The centrepiece, a five meter polished cement table built in situ, seats 14 people – illuminated by a custom made lamp. The table bridges the inside with the outside, with bar stools at the far end on the pool deck and extra tables and chairs available for bigger groups. At the back of the living area the bar is embedded in a marvellous teak wall. Under the black marble-topped counter, the wooden panels conceal cupboards,a wine cooler, and fridge.

The open design of the living area catches the breeze and guides it gently through the interior, keeping the tropical heat at bay, while ceiling fans provide an additional cooling airflow if needed. At night the whole area is secured by sliding glass doors.

The screen and freestanding stairway make up a patterned backdrop for the massive traditional teak sofas, lounge chairs, and bean bags. This is where you relax during the midday tropical heat and where families and friends get together for games and drinks in the evening, with the sound of the ocean as a soothing soundtrack.

Music can be streamed from smartphones or laptops to indoor and outdoor speakers. High speed internet is available and the TV/DVD player provides entertainment.

Infinity Pool & Deck Lounge

With its contemporary shape and organic materials, the infinity pool and deck are designed to help guests unwind and dissolve the stress of modern life. When you swim the 20 meter pool you literally overlook Talalla Bay, framed by gorgeous greenery and the fragrant smells of the tropical garden. Below your feet, the turquoise tones from the handmade Bali tiles light up your path. A shallow, 30 cm deep pool section, ideal for young children with parents close by, is perfect for taking a much-needed cool dip.

Custom made umbrella-shaded loungers will keep you out of the midday sun, with the outdoor shower right next to you on the deck. When you need to move out of the heat and into the shade, the massive sofas under the cooling fans inside are the place to be. The sofa area overlooks the pool and deck, so you won’t miss a thing.

The pool area is often a hub of activity as it extends the entire length of the main house and blends into its interior. The exquisitely designed five meter table extends onto the deck, offering a unique space to lounge, for lazy lunches or star-lit barbecues with friends and family. The sun sets over the bay right in front of you, and it looks even better with a delicious cocktail in hand.

In the morning, the pool and deck are in the shade and a refreshing sea breeze keeps the area cool. It’s an ideal spot for breakfast.

Rooftop Garden Lounge

From the first floor corridor, a stairway takes you to the top of Talalla House and its crown jewel – a 30 meter green roof with bar, sofas, sun loungers, and undisturbed panoramic ocean views. The green roof is planted with grass and flowering shrubs. It’s a world of its own, with spectacular sunsets. Bring your families and friends in the afternoon, have a cocktail or fresh juice from the bar, then sit back and enjoy the show.

The green roof is also home to a vegetable and spice garden. The cook makes his way up here on a daily basis to pick vegetables, lettuce, and spices before returning to the kitchen to prepare your meals. The lawn and vegetation absorb rainwater and are key to cooling down the house, reducing the need for air-conditioning in the bedrooms below.

The grass is planted over a waterproofing membrane and helps the house blend into the surrounding hill. A small section of the green roof holds solar panels that provide hot water for the villa, with zero CO2 emissions.

SLEEPING

Five bedrooms in the main house

The main villa contains five double bedrooms with air-conditioning, en suite bathrooms, and undisturbed ocean views. The four bedrooms on the first floor have private balconies, while the double bedroom adjoining the living area on the ground floor has sliding doors to the pool deck in front and access to a small covered patio in the back.

All bedrooms are equipped with king-size beds, room safes, WiFi, desks, and built-in wardrobes. One of our king-size beds on the first floor can convert to twin if needed. Sliding glass doors open to a private balcony with lounge chairs overlooking the tropical garden and the warm Indian Ocean. This is a private space perfect for some time alone with a book, tea, or coffee.

The bedroom ambience is timeless, with its contemporary design and concrete ceilings blending with tropical colours and a delicate interior. The teak bed frames, pendants, desks, and chairs were all custom made for the rooms. The bathrooms of both the master and junior suites incorporate bathtubs on the balconies with a glorious view of the ocean. A perfect place to cool down on your own, for kids to play, or for a glass of champagne if it’s just the two of you.

The master suite opens onto the balcony on one side and a covered terrace on the other. This area functions as a private outdoor lounge area and a place for yoga and other activities. From the terrace, garden steps lead down to the pool deck. The balconies of the junior suite and the neighbouring bedroom can be connected by a pivoting privacy door, turning the two bedrooms into one large apartment. Joining the two is perfect for families with smaller kids.

A concrete screen wraps around the entire house. The distinctive Sri Lankan screen pattern has become a hallmark of Talalla House. It keeps direct tropical sunlight out of the balconies so that the interior stays cool and pleasant during the day. Its perforated design enables air to pass through the interior of the house and you will notice its soothing effect wherever you go.

Two rustic garden bedrooms

In addition to the five bedrooms in the main house are two smaller double bedrooms accessed from the garden. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan and a unique open-air shower design that ensures privacy and enhances ventilation. The bedrooms open onto a small covered porch overlooking an expansive lawn, with views of the ocean in the background. These rustic and romantic rooms are perfect for teenagers or couples with kids who want to live near the garden on the ground floor, or who prefer an authentic tropical experience surrounded by nature.

DINING

The Talalla House cook is on hand to prepare your daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, select from a Sri Lankan or European spread. Lunch includes light bites, soups, salads, and sandwiches. For dinner, indulge in a sensational Sri Lankan rice and curry banquet or Western dishes that you’ll remember long after your stay.

The cook will accommodate any special dietary requirements or specific requests and can provide cooking classes for guests interested in learning the secrets of Sri Lankan cuisine. Talalla House’s beach location means fresh fish and seafood is abundant, and our cook is an expert at whipping up refreshing, healthy juices and shakes from the fresh tropical fruit.

Professional Kitchen

The kitchen is home to our full time cook and team with more than 30 years’ experience in Sri Lankan and international dishes. Professionally equipped as a “chef’s kitchen” with oven, five-burner stove, large fridge with ice-maker, microwave, dishwasher, blender, toaster, coffee maker, and all the pots and pans you could ask for, this is the stage for informal cooking classes where you may join our cook for a journey deep into the Sri Lankan cuisine, its herbs, spices, curries, and coconut pressing.

If you prefer, you are welcome to get cooking yourself. Our staff can help source your ingredients from the local market, or if you want to experience the bustling market yourself, head out and choose from the wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, fish, and even shark. If you’d rather just sit back and enjoy your meal, our cook is on hand to create some delicious Sri Lankan or international dishes for you.

SPORT & WELLNESS

The Yoga Studio in Talalla House

Located on the first floor of the house, the yoga studio is surrounded by shady palm trees and opens up to a blissful view of Talalla Beach. Here you can stretch out for your daily practice in peaceful solitude or join a private yoga class, which can be scheduled for your preferred time.

With a 40 m2 (430 ft2 ) surface area, up to 16 persons with mats & blocks, or up to 25 without mats can comfortably practice in the open air studio. The space is used for intimate workshops, yoga classes, or meditation, as well as private practice.

The walls are decorated a calming green, and our pebble-washed floor gives you a strong grip on the surface. Attached is a bathroom, and the nearby kitchen provides fresh tea and juices to stay well-hydrated. For some ambience, you can stream music from your smartphone or laptop on the wireless, portable sound system.

Talalla House offers private yoga lessons, meditation, and Ayurvedic treatments for our guests.

Surfing the South Coast of Sri Lanka

One of the attractions of surfing the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka is the variety of breaks, most of them within a 10 to 30 minute drive from Talalla House. Suitable for beginners, longboarders, and intermediate surfers and with enough A-frames and shallow reefs to keep experts happy too. The official surf season on the South Coast is from the end of October to early April. But the low season, April to October, is actually the time of year that brings the most consistent swells; it is the onshore winds that can be a problem during this time. Get out in the morning for the best chance of catching offshore winds. East of Talalla there are a number of secret, wind protected beaches and points perfect for this time a year.

Talalla House can assist with surfboard rentals, English-speaking surf instructors, and transportation to the various points.

Ayurveda, Massage & Wellness

Heal your body and nourish your soul with Ayurvedic treatments, massage and meditation.

he most popular method used to rejuvenate tired bodies and weary souls is Ayurveda. One of the world’s oldest forms of healing, Ayurveda — derived from the Sanskrit words for life (ayuh) and knowledge or science (veda) — originated more than 3,000 years ago and soon spread to Sri Lanka, where Sinhalese kings established Ayurvedic treatment centres in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

At Talalla House, you can enjoy a range of herbal treatments and various types of baths and massages, yoga, and meditation.

The private garden and yoga studio offers a tranquil atmosphere, whether you want a massage or a blend of Ayurvedic treatments and yoga. Certified Ayurvedic doctors and therapists will take you on the journey to wellbeing.

Around the villa

Imagine a place where time holds its breath and the hustle and bustle of modern life seems eons away. When arriving at Talalla, all eyes are drawn to its highlight – the golden sandy beach, lined with swaying coconut palms and huge banyan trees,  where whales cruise the clear turquoise waters just a few miles offshore. In the early morning hours you will see fishermen landing their outrigger canoes on the beach and offloading their catch, as their ancestors did before them.

Talalla Beach Walk

How about a walk? Talalla House is tucked into the hill at the far end of the beach. Walking to the other end of the beach takes approximately 20 minutes and on your way you pass two cozy restaurants built on top of outrigger canoes; the first serves fabulous seafood and Sri Lankan curries. You then pass a small lagoon, where you’ll see white egret and many other birds, as well as the traditional fishing boats lined up with their nets laid out to dry, ready for another trip. At the end of the beach you’ll find the only beach bar and a couple of local guesthouses. This is the lively end of Talalla Beach.

Talalla “Beach Seining”

Talalla Beach is one kilometre of golden sand, and it’s spectacular. But in early morning hours, the setting changes as fishermen land their outrigger canoes and start offloading their catch, the same way their fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers did before them. The most spectacular sight is a fishing technique known as “Beach Seining”. Local fishermen spread a net across the bay via a little canoe. After the net has been cast, the boat circles back and the fisherman work together in two groups, pulling in the giant net, hoping for the big catch: a net full of sardine-like fishes. Watch the show in Talalla, or even  partake in the pulling of the nets. The fishermen actively encourage tourists to “give a hand.”

Safe Swimming

In the season (December to March), Talalla Beach is mostly calm and swimmable. But depending on the weather, swimming in Sri Lanka can be hazardous. Always check with house staff before venturing into the water. Conditions vary considerably even within a few hundred meters. Keep a close eye, or even better, a hand, on your kids when they are in the water. It is recommended that not confident swimmers use the pool
