Villa Avalon

Welcome to Villa Avalon – a glorious seven-bedroom sanctuary a stone’s throw from Kayu Putih beach just north of Seminyak. Three individual villas make up Villa Avalon – the iconic four-bedroom main villa, two-bedroom Avalon 2, and one-bedroom Avalon 3 – each set in beautifully landscaped gardens complete with private pool. Book just one villa or all three; the flexibility of bedroom configurations gives you the choice of anything from one to seven bedrooms.

Award-winning Balinese architect Popo Danes curated the design, crafting contemporary interiors with an Asian twist using Indonesia’s abundant natural materials – elaborately carved sandstone walls, polished teakwood floors, paras stone sun decks, marble basins and terrazzo baths. Vast living areas and individual bedroom suites are embellished with rare antique furniture, modern ‘classic’ pieces and handsome Balinese paintings and artefacts. Coffee table books on Asian design and a library of interesting fiction feed the mind, while within the extensive gardens, heritage teakwood joglos, koi-filled lotus ponds with riverstone water features, moss-covered statuary and the abundance of tropical blooms and manicured bonsais feed the soul. Accompanying the birdsong is the sound of surf crashing onto the beach just beyond the sacred shrine that lies the other side of the villa’s boundary wall.

Feeding the body is the task of the resident chef, who happily whips up Indonesian and international meals from a suggestion menu. He is one of 10 “nothing-is-too-much-trouble” staff dedicated to making guests feel super-special.

When guests have had enough of the three pools, the pool table, and all the privacy and luxury Avalon accords, they can venture onto the expanse of Kayu Putih beach just beyond the villa’s entrance and, facing it, one of Bali’s hippest beach cafes La Laguna – perfect for sunset cocktails and tapas. Five minutes’ stroll down the beach is W Hotel, Potato Head and other notable Seminyak establishments are just 10 minutes further (even less by taxi).

AVALON I

Avalon I’s four air-conditioned bedrooms provide sumptuous sleeping space for from 8 to 14 adults in two separate pavilions. Each has a sitting area with TV and DVD player, and top-of-range mattresses dressed with plump pillows, snuggle-into duvets and crisp cotton bedlinen.

Avalon I comprises three interconnected pavilions fanning out around the swimming pool. From a traditional gateway, steps lead up to the open-sided living room, which also gives access to the upper bedroom suites of the master pavilion and the guest pavilion. Steps lead down to the garden level and the dining hall, guest cloakroom and media room. Behind, across a small courtyard garden, is the kitchen and staff service area. To either side is access to the master and guest suites. Beyond the dining hall, a sail provides shade for the pool deck while at the other end of the pool is the garden joglo.

One of the most beautiful spots on the estate, the upper level living pavilion is an elegant open-sided fan- and sea-breeze-cooled space comprising a large formal seating area, and a games corner with pool table. Below is a formal dining hall with three-metre table seating up to 14 opening onto the pool terrace (where informal alfresco dining under the sail shade is an option). The media room offers an air-conditioned sanctuary for watching a block-buster, dipping into a best-seller, or catching up on emails at the pool-view desk. The poolside antique joglo provides a historic living space in harmony with surrounding nature, and the bedroom terraces provide many quiet corners for contemplation and escape from the crowd.

Master bedroom Suites
The two master suites are opulent in size, décor and facilities. Each comprises a large bedroom opening onto a huge shaded terrace on two sides with breakfast area and daybed, and an adjoining sitting room (where the sofas can be set up as two additional beds). Four-poster king-size beds and statement antique tables resting on polished teakwood floors help create a palatial sanctuary. The glamour continues into the air-conditioned bathrooms which feature statement bathtub, impressive twin marble vanities, rain shower enclosure and a huge walk-in air-conditioned wardrobe.

Guest Suites
Two air-conditioned suites occupy a second sleeping pavilion – each with queen-size bed and sitting area for watching satellite TV. The downstairs suite opens directly onto the garden while the upper room features a spacious terrace with breezy garden-view seating. Both ensuite bathrooms feature twin marble basins, rain shower and a walk-in wardrobe. The downstairs bathroom has a second shower and a bathtub in a small courtyard, while the upper level ensuite also has a bidet enclosure.

AVALON II

Avalon II’s traditional Balinese entrance opens onto a delightfully private walled garden. Here, an open-sided living and dining pavilion with kitchenette provides easy access to the sun terrace and pool, set on manicured lawns surrounded by tropical blooms. To one side is the sleeping pavilion where two bedrooms – each with its own ensuite bathroom and dressing area – open onto a shared veranda.

The living pavilion is formed from the four-pillar heart of a historic teakwood joglo from Java and its ornately carved ceiling is a treat to behold. Under a statement chandelier an all-weather rattan table accords semi-alfresco dining for six; meals can be prepared by the estate chef, or whipped up in the well-equipped kitchenette. Comfortable chairs invite afternoon siestas – though poolside sun loungers may be preferred by those seeking a holiday tan.

The high vaulted ceiling of the sleeping pavilion give both bedrooms – one with a king-size bed, the other a queen – a theatrical sense of space, heightened by handsome furnishings and arresting Balinese paintings. Granite basins and walk-in rain showers add glamour to both ensuites and there’s generous wardrobe space for the nattiest holiday packer.

AVALON III

Avalon III’s traditional Balinese entrance opens directly onto a lotus pond where steps lead past Buddha-head water features to decorative glass doors into the open-plan living and dining room that opens onto the pool terrace. A small lobby leads to the bedroom with ensuite bathroom/dressing room and seating area that also opens to the pool terrace. Avalon III has access to the main villa garden – a useful short-cut for those renting both villas together.

Avalon III’s light-filled open-plan living room with vaulted ceiling is unusually large for a one-bedroom villa. At one end, set before double doors that open onto the sun-trap pool terrace, comfortably upholstered sofa and chairs are grouped around a glass-topped coffee table before the 42-inch TV with home theatre system. At the other end, a marble-topped counter with sit-up bar separates the beautifully equipped kitchen from the dining area, where four white leather chairs are set around a formal table.

Avalon III provides the perfect sanctuary for a couple who value extra privacy. Accessed via a small lobby off the living room, the bedroom features a queen-size bed and small seating area facing the pool terrace beyond a wall of glass double doors. Alongside is a positively palatial L-shaped ensuite bathroom, with twin basins, statement bathtub, rain shower enclosure, and a separate dressing room and walk-in wardrobe.
